KOBINAI: A New Era
On 1 January, KOBINAI announced the closure of their store on Instagram. Initially, it seemed like the brand was just another casualty of the COVID-19 pandemic, but closer inspection of the post revealed something quite different.
Located in Harajuku’s LaForet, KOBINAI is a brand known for bold graphics, edgy prints and in-your-face slogans. People looking for a colourful coordinate know this is the place to go. The brand director, Maimi, is a former gyaru and naturally she carried the same bold style through to her designs for KOBINAI.

The announcement basically said that the store was closing in preparation for a new era. Maimi wants her new designs to express things that her old designs hadn’t been able to. The brand will come back better than ever with a totally new look. And the shop is being renovated to match.
KOBINAI will reopen on 23 February, and their online store now ships worldwide so everyone can get their hands on the new pieces. You don’t have to be in Harajuku to get the Harajuku style!
