Beauty Call: Mi-yu

They say that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Bright, colourful, weird, or wonderful—the Japanese street fashion community is home to a wealth of creatives who reimagine themselves with their make-up artistry on a daily basis. Flower stamps, neon lips… a wicked black wing? Make-up transforms and redefines beauty, and Beauty Call is here to introduce and showcase some of the new faces within our community.

Meet Mi-yu, a singer-songwriter
and lover of make-up!

Please introduce yourself.

Hello, my name is Mi-Yu. I’m a singer-songwriter from Toyama Prefecture living in Tokyo. I’m a radio personality on Shibuya Cross FM’s Shibuya Music Power.

I moved to Tokyo in 2017. I have branched out from the Hokuriku region of Japan to Tokyo, and I have actively been building my career domestically and internationally. I have won a lot of prizes for a variety of competitions, I have been invited to perform as a guest artist for a number of events and in a variety of shows.

I collaborated with Youtuber Kumamiki and Araiguma Rascal in April 2016 on the song Shining Out which was on my album. And my first album, Only One, went on sale in November 2019 nationwide to rave reviews.

How did you get into make-up?

I got into it when kuro-gyaru was popular. I used to wear make-up styles like ganguro. Since then, I’ve wanted to have my own unique style and I still enjoy wearing quirky styles as a Harajuku fashion singer-songwriter.

What does beauty mean to you?

Beauty depends on your ability to make the most of your strengths and weaknesses. I think that it is beautiful when a person or thing can express who or what they are without destroying themselves, regardless how old they are or how old they get.

Any last words?

Music and fashion are an essential part of any era. I want to spend the rest of my life expressing myself. Please keep in touch.
