Animal Café

When you think of “crazy Japan” you might think of the animal cafés dotted around the city. From dogs to cats; owls to snakes—there’s no pet you can’t cuddle! Or at least try to! Many people in Japan can’t own a pet due to housing restrictions, so a good alternative are these cafés. Animals are great companions and a great remedy to an isolated daily life.

Depending on which café you choose to go to, the atmosphere can vary. Spending an hour with your own hedgehog may seem like a good idea at first, but the poor things don’t usually get much sleep and end up angrily peeing on you.

For a more relaxing experience, try a cat café. It may take a while for them to warm up to you but once they like you, you can easily spend hours petting them and enjoying their company!

The animals provide us with such comfort we can only hope the cafés care for them as much in return.

Here are some you may want to try:

Nyankoto
Yokohama Subtropical Teahouse
HARRY (Hedgehog café)
Forest of Owl
