2019 Tokyo New Designer Fashion Grand Prix

The Tokyo New Designer Fashion Grand Prix is one of the most prominent fashion awards for students and emerging designers. The S/S 2020 joint runway show was held at Shibuya Hikarie—and what a show it was! Applicants were split into two groups: amateur and professional. The amateur category was a showcase of technical skill and masterclass fabric manipulations resulting in a number of memorable avant-garde pieces. Notable trends in the amateur collections were larger-than-life ruffles toying with silhouette distortion, and face masks reminiscent of the 90s’ Club Kids. The professional category was full of wearable pieces with clear narratives in each collection. Standout trends here included longline tops and formal jackets styled with otherwise casual outfits.
